Employment of Tutors in the USA: Online or Offline Tutoring

If you are looking for tutoring jobs, you first need to decide if you want to offer online or offline tutoring.

If you decide to offer online tutoring your next decision is whether to offer your services through a tutoring website such as Tutor.com or establish a website of your own. If you choose the former option your rates are set by the site you are affiliated with, and if you choose the latter option you can set your own rates.

Another factor to consider when deciding whether or not to sign up with a tutoring website (such as Tutor.com) is that you will need to be able to pass a detailed background check. If you choose to affiliate with this type of tutoring website, you will also need to undergo a thorough vetting of your tutoring skills and knowledge of the subject(s) you wish to tutor in. This may include testing and mock tutoring sessions.

If you’re choosing to take the independent route and tutoring in grades K-12, be prepared for parents of potential tutees to do background checks on you as well. If you have issues in your past that would cause problems, tutoring children may not be the best option for you but you might still be able to tutor college-age students or adult learners.

If you decide to offer face-to-face live offline tutoring, the decisions are where to offer the tutoring (your home, the students’ home, a school classroom, library, etc.), how much to charge for your services, and how to advertise your services. Again, parents of K-12 students (who are usually the people who are paying for your services) may opt to do background checks on you; for safety reasons, you should also have a policy in place that requires the parent(s) or another responsible adult to attend all tutoring sessions no matter where they occur.

Setting your rates for either online or offline tutoring requires some research into what the going rates are in your area. In my area, the rates range from $35.00 per hour to $50.00 per hour depending on the skill level and experience of the tutor. Wyzant gives you a list of local tutors and what they charge (their tutors mainly offer offline tutoring). Your competition may also have websites so check them out and price yourself accordingly unless you have extra skills or specialize in unique skill sets that can justify a higher hourly rate.
